AUXILIARY UNIT 43 UPDATE
Patricia Blanton

April is the Month of the Military Child. It is our goal to acknowledge them as a vital part of the military family. Carla Shirer, a Navy veteran, has an adult son who was a “Navy Brat" for 17 years. Although he hated moving and all the deployments, he loved being in a special community which instilled in him a greater sense of responsibility to those around him. The Auxiliary supports Military Children. During the Christmas holiday, Unit 43, through Rebecca Stewart-Wilson, purchased gifts for Air Force children affiliated with El Segundo. For every service member there is a family. Military children have a special place in our hearts and we work hard to support them as much as possible throughout the year. We encourage those members with girls under age 18 to join the Auxiliary as a Junior!

Unit 43 is hosting a "Tea" for the young women going to Girls' State in the month of May. Unit 283 and its Girls' State candidates also will be in attendance at that time. Tamra Brown of Unit 43 is the Girls' State Chair and is working very hard to make this event a smashing success! We anticipate over one hundred guests at this function. We, and especially Tamra, want to make this a very special event. As such, we are seeking volunteers who can assist us, as well as donations of colorful springtime flowers, food, and ideas for token gifts to make this Girls' State event elegant and memorable, and representative of Unit 43. We thank the Legion and the Sons for providing financial support to sponsor these outstanding, deserving young women! Our deepest thanks go to Tamra Brown for being the driving force behind this important project.  Finally, we appreciate and acknowledge the never-ending contributions and guidance of Judy Urich. Thank you all!

New members of Unit 43 were initiated on March 20, 2017. Welcome! We look forward to your new energy, ideas and friendship

SONS SQUADRON 43 UPDATE
James Castellanos

This past month, Squadron 43 sent representatives to the Spring Department Executive Committee meeting in Baldwin Park.  The Spring D.E.C. gives us the opportunity to meet with members from other squadrons and share in some of our successes.  It is also a great opportunity to collaborate with other squadrons and discuss our goals for the year.  Thanks to Xavier Corral and Glen Schecter for attending the meeting and representing our squadron.

Squadron 43 would like to congratulate Sons member Ben Schecter for recently earning the rank of Eagle Scout, which is the highest attainable rank in the Boy Scouts.  Helping our youth is one of the pillars of the American Legion and we are proud to have assisted Ben in his path towards this achievement.

Mark your calendars - Flag Placement will take place on May 27th at the Los Angeles National Cemetery in honor of Memorial Day.  All Sons and family members are welcome to attend and help us place flags to honor our fallen heroes.

Don’t forget, our meetings are held on the first Monday of every month in the Sons room.  Come on out and see what’s new with Squadron 43!
