SEPTEMBER GENERAL POST MEMBERSHIP MEETING
At the last post meeting, Sept. 26, 2017, we welcomed back Legionnaires André Andrews and Charles Chavez from hurricane-ravaged Texas, where they spent a week assisting with local relief efforts in the Houston area on behalf of Post 43. Post commander Fernando Rivero and Legionnaires Greg Alaimo and Jenn Crandell received a signed jersey as a thank you for our donation to Project Hero. And the membership got to meet and hear stories from the high school students we sponsored for this year's Boys State. (Photos by Keven Freedman)
VICTORY MEMORIAL GROVE WWI MONUMENT PROJECT EARNS NATIONAL GRANT AWARD
Our Victory Memorial Grove project has been selected by the National World War One Centennial Commission as one of the awardees of their 100 Cities/100 Memorials grant program. Since our project is done, the $2,000 we receive will probably be put into further upkeep on the rest of the park.
Two weeks ago the Commission resolved to designate the awarded memorials as “WWI Centennial Memorials”. Being the congressionally created U.S. government agency for the national commemoration of World War One, such a designation is an official national designation.
Also, the winning submissions have an opportunity to be included in a commemorative coffee table book about the 100 Cities / 100 Memorials project, as well as other recognition yet in the planning stages.
Special thanks to Legionnaire Les Probst for leading Post 43's part of the effort to restore this beautiful memorial to California's WWI dead. Thanks to Courtland Jindra and to his mother Kim, for spearheading this project and partnering with the LA Daughters of the American Revolution as well as The Mission Continues, the Walt Disney Company, and Los Angeles Dept. of Recreation and Parks.
