POST 43 OFFICERS LEAD CALIFORNIA AMERICAN LEGION'S 24TH DISTRICT

Michael Hjelmstad (left) was presented with his Commander's Cap by District 24 and Post 43 Past Commander Tom Urich at the 99th Department of California Convention.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Michael Hjelmstad, Post 43's First Vice Commander, was elected commander of the 24th District of the Department of California American Legion June 25, 2017 at the American Legion Department of California convention in Riverside. He will oversee the 13 posts that comprise California's 24th District in the greater Los Angeles area.  Past Commander of Post 43, David Gibson, will serve as his First Vice for the 2017-2018 Legion year. This marks a shift from recent years when Palisades Post 283 had a consistently dominant run as leaders of the district.

District commanders are among the most important individuals in The American Legion organization. They are the representatives of posts within a defined area of a department: a "district." They are the liaisons between posts and departments, responsible for relaying information through both levels. Facilitating communication in this manner ensures the Legion operates as a national entity.

We wish Mike the best of luck in the year ahead!

LEGION THEATER PROJECT GETS FINAL APPROVAL FROM CITY

After nearly three years of planning, the City of Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety granted Post 43 final approval June 21 to issue permits for construction on the Hollywood Legion Theater renovation project. Next, the Theater Committee will review final bids from the contractor shortly and work will commence soon after approval. Demolition work has already been underway for several weeks as the historic seats were dismantled and stored, and old carpet and flooring removed in preparation for the reno.

The long permit review process by the city delayed start on the project significantly. Once work commences, it will be several months, but the committee is hoping to make a target for grand opening before 2017 is out. More updates as they become available. When complete, the theater will be a state-of-the-art cinema capable of 4K digital and 35mm and 70mm film exhibition with Dolby Surround sound. If you would like to help contribute to the costs of the project or to sponsor a seat (and get a plaque in your honor or that of a loved one), please visit our Crowdrise fundraising site or hollywoodpost43.org/donate

CALL FOR POST COMMITTEE CHAIRS: PLAN TO MEET DURING SOCIAL NIGHT JULY 10

Calling all post committee chairpersons! Our next gathering at the post will be on July 10 to kick off the return of "Social & Committees Night."  For our newer members, this is a more informal version of our regular meeting nights, where we serve dinner but use the time for socializing, camaraderie, and provide space for members to get together in their committees and work on organizing projects.  This is a great opportunity to get involved. Some of the committees include Community Service, Emergency Preparedness, Oratorical Contest, Membership, Entertainment, Sports, and more.

If you are a committee chair and would like to meet with your members at the July 10 social night, email the commander at fernando@post43.org to get included in an upcoming email announcement to the membership, and watch this space for more information on upcoming opportunities on how to get involved with your post!
