From the Legion Theater Committee:

Swift progress continues on Post 43's ambitious project to renovate our theater!  The work continues on schedule. The last several weeks have seen the completion of several key milestones. Here is an update and some photo and video:

New front steps were poured in order to create a pathway for wheelchairs and other disabled members and patrons to finally be able to enter the Post clubhouse and access the rotunda and theater through the grand front entrance.

A hydraulic lift hidden off to the side of the building will elevate wheelchair-bound and other persons with impaired mobility up to the main level in the courtyard in front of the building, with the added benefit of providing wider, safer steps and casual bench seating.

All the work on this project is properly permitted and inspected by the Los Angeles Department of Building & Safety, adheres to standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and is approved by the City of L.A. Office of Historic Resources. Here the concrete is freshly poured and still wet, hence the dark color.  Photo by Bill Steele

2. Completed demolition of side risers and pouring of new lightweight concrete floor in the theater auditorium

Workers screed and float new concrete floor in the theater. The new floor will allow for proper installation of new theater seats and good sight lines to the stage and screen.  Video by Bill Steele

3. Holes core-drilled in theater floor in preparation for new heating and cooling

Demolition of the old drop ceiling in the cabaret room was required to install a plenum that will route air conditioning and heating through the original ductwork up into the theater through the floor. New vent holes are required to evenly heat and cool the center of the room where new seats will be installed.  Video by Bill Steele
